Wow, Labor Day weekend is here. Did you get to the beach yet? Did you have a stress-free and relaxing summer? Did you get to spend more quality time with family and friends? I hope that you answered yes to at least one of those questions. For those who live here at the Jersey shore, we have so many great beaches and attractions that are all within a 60-mile radius and some may even be right in our own backyards. If you live near Atlantic City, you’re only a few steps or a few miles away from the resort’s beach, as well as the Ventnor, Margate and Longport beaches.
My observation is that the longer the distance away you are from Atlantic City, the quieter the beach. I love Margate’s beach. If you go a few blocks past Lucy, it can make for a very relaxing setting.
Each year, many of us who live in the Atlantic City region say to ourselves that we will set time aside to enjoy some of the fab summertime places, which are abundant in our area. But then of course “life” happens and we make excuses, and then, before you know it, Labor Day weekend sneaks up on us and the cycle starts all over.
Due to this long holiday weekend being the unofficial last weekend of summer, some would say it’s the perfect time to slip into your planned relaxation mode. Starting this month, even though it will still be beautiful outside, it will also start getting a little chilly and some of us may be trying to plan a fun vacation in the Caribbean or somewhere, or maybe use one of those $9 club fares that Spirit offers out of Atlantic City International Airport.
Either way, some of us crave the sun and for those who do: treat yourselves to it. Especially when it could take 10 minutes or less to get to the nearest beach. Of course, the other side to that story, something that year-round shore residents are very well aware of, is something that starts with a capital T — Traffic! Doug Larson said it best “If all the cars in the United States were placed end to end, it would probably be Labor Day weekend.”
Although traffic this holiday weekend won’t be so pleasant, that’s what we get for living in and around shore towns. Soon enough we will have our streets and beaches back.
Life is about moving forward and embracing what comes our way. I try to look at the end of summer in a positive way. We can be more focused in work and in our life activities, and, for some, it’s back-to-school time. Here’s another quote some parents of school-age children may enjoy, this one by Bill Dodds, “Labor Day is a glorious holiday because your child will be going back to school the next day. It would have been called Independence Day, but that name was already taken.”
I guess all in all, no matter what you get out of Labor Day weekend, try to not let the traffic get in your way and make sure to just give yourself at least one day of peace and quiet.
Or at least an hour.
Take time to relax your brain and body and take time to do something fun. Labor Day weekend at the Jersey shore means gorgeous weather (usually), friendly folks, and, of course, those great Labor Day weekend sales. Look for sales at the Hamilton Mall, Atlantic City Outlets: The Walk, The Pier Shops at Caesars or Historic Smithville to name but a few local shopping areas.
