Celebrity, Charity and a little Attitude
By Whitney Ullman
Some of you may have heard of the little known week long fashion show called “Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week.”
With similar fashion shows popping up all over the country it’s been time New Jerseyans have one of their own.
Donnella Tilery, founder of DC Showroom, stepped in and this year’s show mirrored NYC with fashion showcases inside tents on Pier A Park, in Hoboken, NJ. Organizers named the Susan G. Komen North Jersey branch recipient of funds this year and the previous year.
To make matters even more fun, I was asked to walk the runway this year to help raise money for Susan G. Komen North Jersey.
Put with the celebrity line-up alongside guests from, New Jersey Housewives, Food Network, America’s Next Top Model, and New York 1 News I was thrilled to work on behalf of raising funds for survivors of breast cancer.
It felt like the celebrity scene you see on TV at an upscale event, except this audience was more down to earth and friendly looking. Each designer showed off their creativity, using Vitamin Water Zero sponsor as their guide. They displayed fashions with neon colors that mirrored the drink colors and there were jewelry designers who are up-and-coming and looking for a way to get in front of a targeted audience
Ok, now the real fun part. Time for hair and makeup, FINALLY! It felt like forever. But as my grandmother always says, “I’m not complaining, only mentioning”.
Anyway backstage was chaos, but a fun chaos. Whether models were in hair, makeup, or wardrobe there was not a dull moment. I got bumped from one make up to another after learning that I was in Kim G from the Real Housewives of New Jersey’s designated spot.
Everyone was trying to act really cool, but secretly they were like, OMG there’s Kim G. The picture my makeup artist took of me in my chair where Kim G happened to be in the frame was a big hit on my Facebook wall. Some told me to watch out for her and to stay far away.
Of course, being the person I am, I like to always get to know someone first before judging their character. She was actually very cordial, and unassuming. She wasn’t THAT bad, and as we all know, reality shows are pretty much all fake anyway.
I’m sure she was just playing a character on TV, but I couldn’t make a final judgment because we didn’t get to really chat. I did notice that she was very open to talking with fans so to me that was definitely a plus.
The other celebs didn’t really say much either. It’s pretty much the fact that we were all there for the same cause, to raise money for breast cancer awareness. No one was being too snobby; everyone seemed friendly for the most part. Of course my husband would tell me I am too naïve. Ha!
The event as a whole did have a New York vibe but definitely a New Jersey style. It ended with an invitation-only VIP party inside The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus, Garden State Plaza Mall.
All of the fashionista moments are captured by professional Studio25 photographer, Al Chaudhri so make sure to check out some of the photos athttp://newjerseyfashionweek.com.
Enjoy. Until next time my fabulous fashionistas!
