Actor, singer, and former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell recently hosted The Pool After Dark at Harrah's Resort where he candidly chatted about his good friend Amanda Bynes and his new album.
NJ.com: How does it feel to be hosting The Pool After Dark here in Atlantic City?
DRAKE BELL: I love Atlantic City and to be here is amazing. Everyone has been so incredible. The only thing I have to say is don’t bet on roulette, because here’s what happened: My number is 32 red and I got distracted by a pretty girl and 32 red hit.
You've done a lot of television and film, and then broke into the music industry, so what's in store for your fans?
DRAKE BELL: I’m working on a new record in July with Peter Colins, who is an amazing producer, and Brian Stetzer is executive producer. The record is coming out soon; we’re recording it in Nashville. Here’s what I’m telling people: You know Back to the Future? Well, turn on your flux capacitor and go back to the future, because we are doing Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, all the old Rockabilly cats and we’re gonna do a real Rock & Roll record, because all this “boots and pants” - i’m over it. I wanna walk in here and see a guitar slung down and rock and roll. So that’s what my next record is going to be, pure rock and roll.
Going back to acting, you worked with Amanda Bynes for years, what's your opinion of the media frenzy going on right now?
DRAKE BELL: Oh, the media sucks. I mean I talk to her every day. She is beautiful and talented and it’s like if tomorrow you wanted to get a Mohawk and you walked into work, what would people say? “Oh she’s lost her mind” but you just wanted to get a mohawk, you didn’t lose your mind. And that’s what’s happening to Amanda. She wants to change her look and be her own person. It’s been very difficult for her with her family to actually branch out on her own. She finally has a moment to do it and everyone is ruining it for her. You know, it’s like they are ruining her moment to be herself.
Well, then why can’t she just go public and say that?
DRAKE BELL: Because, here’s the thing, if she says it, how much more publicity is that going to bring to her, you know what I mean? So she just tries to be in her own world and she gets caught, and she’s not a drug addict because I talk to her every day and she is completely cool. I called her and said 'Amanda are you ok? I’ve been seeing this stuff in the tabloids and it’s making me really mad' and she goes, 'Drake, I’m fine”...it’s media taking everything out of context.' She’s beautiful, she’s Carol Burnett, she’s Lucille Ball, she’s owning it and the media is putting her under a lot of pressure. And when somebody is under pressure like that, they are going to lash out. She’s brilliant, she’s classy...I’m going to have dinner with her in a week, and she is amazing.
